MSW: Roads funding doesn t compensate for high petrol prices

A new poll has found the federal government's policy of spending $1.6 billion on roads
rather than compensating consumers for high petrol prices has not won public support.

The poll also found that nearly half, 46 per cent of those surveyed, felt worse off
as a result of the GST, compared with 43 per cent who believe the GST has made no difference.

The Sydney Morning Herald has reported the survey, by AC Nielsen, shows 63 per cent
would prefer a freeze in petrol excise rather than the revenue spend on roads.

The poll found just 28 per cent preferred the money being spent on upgrading roads.

Support for the GST is split equally, with 48 per cent opposing it, up seven points,
compared with a rise of two points in the percentage of its supporters.

Just 10 per cent think they're better off under the new tax system.
